Planned Professional Sports Stadiums and Arenas: New Kansas City Royals Ballpark
Updated on 10/15/2024.
BuildCentral tracks planned construction across all verticals, and planned pro sports stadiums/arenas are no exception. We’re tracking various planned pro sports stadium projects, as well as the companies and decision-makers behind them. Plus, we analyze the construction impact on other nearby developments. Here’s all the data we have on the new Kansas City Royals ballpark.
Since 1973, the Royals have played at Kauffman Stadium. Seating 37,903, Kauffman Stadium, referred to as the K, has been one of the best MLB stadiums for decades but has aged significantly and fallen behind modern ballpark standards. Fans have wondered why the Royals won’t simply renovate the stadium. Earl Santee, a senior principal at Populous, said renovating the stadium is ‘not feasible or realistic.” “Renovating The K going forward is just not feasible,” Santee said. “It’s not realistic.” Santee said an ‘independent structural engineer’ examined Kauffman Stadium and found ASR, which is often referred to as concrete cancer. “The K is just not functional to sustain the Royals for the next 40 years,” he said. “The renovated K does not provide the benefits a new site does.”
The new stadium will be located at the old Kansas City Star Press Pavilion in the south loop at 1601 McGee St. The $2 billion-plus stadium is set to be built just blocks away from the T-Mobile Center and the Power & Light District in “the heart of Kansas City.” The goal is for the stadium, which will seat about 34,000 fans, to be ready in time for the 2028 season. With the new ballpark comes many new construction projects and foot traffic for local companies, which we’ll get to shortly.

As of 10/10/24, the tax ballot for funding for the project in this location failed. They are not searching for other locations for the project. |
As previously mentioned, the Royals hope to have the new ballpark completed by the 2028 season. It’s worth noting that Kansas City residents voted against providing public funding for the project, making it a possibility that the Royals will build elsewhere, perhaps in Kansas. As of the publication of this article, the Royals still plan to build at the above location in Kansas City, Missouri. We will provide updates when available.
