HotelMarketData BuildCentral is currently keeping tabs on nearly $165 billion in planned and under-construction hotel projects across the United States. In looking at the states responsible for the most hotel projects and dollars in development, we ran into the usual suspects like California, Florida, and Texas, and that’s all well and good. One name that stood out, though, was North Carolina. As such, we’ve decided now’s the time to get you the latest on planned hotel construction in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Take a look at the below Geospex Heatmap, which displays North Carolina’s $5.5 billion-plus in planned and under-construction hotel projects. Charlotte’s hotspot catches the eye, along with those of Raleigh and Asheville.
Charlotte alone accounts for more than a quarter of North Carolina’s planned hotel construction by both projects and dollars.
To be clear, for planned hotel construction in Charlotte to be so active is hardly surprising. Mecklenburg County, which houses Charlotte, has seen its population increase by over 21 percent in the last decade amid Charlotte’s emergence as an attractive destination for those leaving more crowded east-coast urban hubs. In fact, 104 people move to Charlotte per day at the current rate.
What’s more is that Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the country’s 11th-busiest, supporting numerous transatlantic flights on a daily basis in addition to a full slate of domestic travel.
